Not since World War II has the notion of a Victory Garden been so prevalent. Not only can a backyard garden provide you and your family with a balanced nutritious diet, but the very act of gardening itself is invaluable to our morale and well-being. It is also the perfect activity for the whole family. Get your kids away from their TV and devices. Take them out into the backyard and get your garden growing. If you don’t have an outdoor space, a patio, a balcony, or a southern facing window will suffice.
Let’s start right now. I’m going to show you how.
Hi, my name is George Pessin and I have been a UC-certified Master Gardener since 2004. Since 2010 I have been teaching the Grow LA Victory Garden Classes, a multi-session 12-hour course conceived to teach local urban dwellers how to grow their own fruits and vegetables. I was scheduled to teach the class again this spring at Greystone Demonstration Garden in Beverly Hills, CA, however, unfortunately, due to Covid19, the classes had to be canceled. So instead of you all coming to me, I’m going to come to you.
For the next few weeks, I’ll be discussing the following topics:
Planning, soil preparation, soil structure, tools, seed starting, raised beds, container gardening, plant selection (what to grow and when to grow it), plant nutrition, organic fertilizers, transplanting, irrigation, mulching, integrated pest management (weeds, diseases, and pests), organic pesticides, composting, worm composting, pollination, seed saving, fruit trees, and harvesting.
I am offering my garden book, The Edible Backyard Vegetable Garden, for free. Let’s grow greatness together!
